Perimeter of compound shapes

For ths week we have been learning about compound shapes and how to find the perimeter of it.

First we learnt what a compound shape is and then secondly we learnt how to find perimeters, learning how to do this helps me with my strand maths and gives me better knowledge for my future years in college.

I found learning this part of maths very fun and confusing because I went through a couple obstacles learning this.

Squared Roots

For maths we have been learning squared roots which was very fun and interesting to learn.

Squared roots is easy but it can get confusing at some times because you might think that it is the number multiplied by two but its always multiplied by itself which is very easy to do once you get the hang of it.

Check out this DLO me and my group made to get a good understanding!

Physical Activity Leaders

For the past few weeks PALS have been enjoying their time giving little juniors, games and time to have fun during their breaks. First  the PALS learnt from our coach, we learnt all the games we give to the juniors from our coach. Every week each one of the PALs give the little kids an opputurnity to play sports games and have alot of fun. Being a PAL is very fun for me because I give the little students more better activities to do when they  don´t play at lunch time.

Te Reo

Every Wednesday for the past few weeks Whaea Odie has been teaching us line dances and the clock in Maori.

We have been learning this line dance we were given permission to do it at assembly, at first it was very hard and most of the class were stiff while learning. But after the past few weeks and good practise and hard work all of the class got a good hang of it.

Learning the Maori way to see clocks and tell the time in Maori was easy once we got a good understanding of the clock words like quarter to ten. In general learning both topics and learning how to dance to songs was very fun and I would recommend it to other people.

Highest Common Multiple

This week in math, Group 1 is learning about something called the highest common factor. Basically, the highest common factor is the biggest number that can divide into two or more numbers exactly, without leaving anything left over.

To understand this better, think about what factors are. Factors are numbers that you can multiply together to make a bigger number. For example, if you multiply 6 by 8, you get 48. So, 6 and 8 are factors of 48.

When we talk about the highest common factor of two numbers, we are looking for the biggest number that can fit evenly into both of those numbers. For example, if you look at 12 and 18: the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12; and the factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. The biggest number that appears in both lists is 6. So, the highest common factor of 12 and 18 is 6. This means 6 is the largest number that divides evenly into both 12 and 18.

One interesting fact I learnt was if I taught students and learnt st getting good at finding the highest common factor it helps them to understand how numbers relate to each other and can be useful in many math problems, like simplifying fractions or dividing things into equal parts.

Significant Figures

This week, Group 1  made a DLO to explain how to work with significant figures in numbers on the DLO. Significant figures are the important digits in a number that show its precision. The resource helps you understand how to keep track of these digits when solving math problems.

The idea is that sometimes you need to show all the significant figures in a number, whether it has one, two, three, four, or five. Doing this makes it easier to work with the number correctly. For example, if you have the number 886,652, and you want to round it to different significant figures:

– To have only 1 significant figure, you look at the first digit and round the number to the nearest hundred thousand, so it becomes 900,000.
– To have 2 significant figures, you keep the first two digits, which are 88, and then round, making it 890,000.
– To have 3 significant figures, keep 888, and the number becomes 887,000.

One interesting fact I learnt was that if I shows these steps clearly, it is making it easier for students to understand how to identify and work with significant figures. Whilst also understanding how to do this is useful because it helps make measurements and calculations more accurate and consistent, especially in math.

Samoan Language Week Skit

For Samoan language week we made a skit showing how foreign students might find struggles while being at a school that doesn´t speak their language. The first thing we did was make a script, second we added roles to our characters. Ahea was Mr K I was the foreign student and Donyal was the student helper.

Look out our video to see what we made!

2026 Learning Journey

For SLC (student lead confrences) we made learning journeys that helped us show our Whanau our blogs that we are most proud of, I chose to decorate this DLO the most that represented my culture and what could connect me to my family. The SLC was very fun and I enjoyed showing my family my work. In my opinion I think they were very pleased with my work. Have a look here to what I chose as my Learning Journey!

Kapa Haka Teachers only day

This week we did a kapa haka for teachers around auckland,i was very nervous but it was very cool to perform, it was awesome because we had a great pleasure to invite them to our school by doing a Haka, the haka was very strong and a good way of welcoming the teachers, something i enjoyed was having the pleasure to do a Haka for the Teachers and seeing smiling back at the Kapa Haka Group
